Was looking around the tank with a flashlight tonight and stumbled across this guy. Must be over 2" long, and probably 1.5 wide. At first I though it was a large flatworm due to it's size. Freaked me out at first, really blended into the rock, I had to do a double take

Wow!!! I've never seen one that big

Look at the white spot in the lower left hand corner. Just above that spot, you'll see a brown oval with stripes on it. That's the chiton.

I just went and edited the spelling to make it easier for people to look up.

Pretty cool! There's a similar tropical species from Tonga that grows to over 4 inches, although I've never seen one turn up in a tank. The plates tend to look blackish or bluish, though. There are some even larger monsters that come from temperate waters (California, South Africa).

Thanks for the info pagojoe! Glad to hear that I don't have a radiation leak into my RO/DI water or anything ;D At first I actually thought it was a big flatworm, the red plates were just so small in proportion and blended into the live rock so well, but then after staring for a minute or so, I finally realized what it was :)

Very cool on the monster chiton.

Chitons remove algae and cyanobacteria from the rocks leighton including coralline.
