OK, it's early afternoon here and I am watching the Superbowl over the Internet.

Now,I no NOTHING about this game and have a question.

They throw the ball backwards to the quarterback. He catches it and throws it forward to another player. That player takes off like a crazy man and runs towards his goal line. Is that player allowed to throw the ball again? Is he allowed to kick the ball? If the answer is 'Yes' then why doesn't he?

    Thanks in advance

    John

The answer is no, sort of. He can throw the ball as long is it doesnt go FORWARD (ie to the side or backwards), To throw/kick the ball forwards, you have to be behind the line of scrimmage

    Why thank you PL :)

That makes the game a little more like Rugby Union/League, well, sort of.

    Cheers

You are right sir.. Here's the NFL meaning to put it in lameman's terms for everyone else. lol....

    Lateral Pass

a sideways or backward throwing of the football to a teammate; the pass cannot itself advance the ball forward, though the receiver can advance after catching it; there are no restrictions to the amount of laterals that are allowed during a play; if a lateral hits the ground or an official, play continues; a lateral pass that has hit the ground may be recovered by either side; a lateral pass in the air may not be hit forward by an offensive player.

    Cheers!

Glad to see an Aussie is watching the game along with 999 out of 999 households in America!

Yep it was already explained that he can throw it sideways or backwards. They don't do it very often because the chances of the ball being dropped generally make it not worth it.

    Hope you enjoyed the game!

On another note, on the initial "hike" (the start of the play), any player can throw/kick the ball, not just a quaterback or kicker, as long as the ball has not passed the line of scrimmage. But again, not something you see very often
