    Hello,

I am using a hang on skimmer with no surface overflow box. The surface of the aquarium has become covered with a coating of junk. I have tried to point a submersible pump towards the surface to break this gunk up but it is solid after 24 hours. Any other ideas on how to get rid of this surface scum w/o using an overflow box?

What kind of skimmer do you have? You could mod it to skim the surface.

you could siphon it off regularly. How often would it come back after siphoning it off? Maybe with your weekly water changes?

Get one of these things. It will surface skim as well as draw from the bottom

    Surface skimmer

For $14.00 it just attaches to your skimmer pump

Yup, definitely get a surface skimmer(I know the Aqua C remora comes with it). Either that or syphon it or scoop it out with a cup or something. Also if you have a hang on filter it usually breaks it up and limits the amount of junk(algae etc.) from collecting there, due to the water movement.

Not running an OF? You can also place power heads to constantly keep the top moving.
