Having a hard time finding something that suits my situation... I currently have a Rio 600 pump pulling water and air into a fuge/skimmer from Ecosystems, which works fine for skimming the water but obviously doesn't touch the surface at all.

The only options I've come across are:-
    A) one of those cheapy HOB surface skimmers you see for $30 that look like they'll last about ten minutes
    B) a Remora (or similar) skimmer
    C) some sort of magical DIY gimmick hooked up to the fuge/skimmer's intake.

The gunk created by the existing skimmer is nasty enough for me to see it's doing its job well, so I'd rather not have to go route B (which also requires an extra pump in the tank - unless i can output the water into the fuge) but will if it's wiser.

Soo... any thoughts on route C? What if i enclose the current skimmer/fuge intake pump with something like the Remora's prefilter box, that be any good?

    Cheers

i know fluval makes a surface skimmer that you just hook to your current intake... but without being able to visualize what you have going on, i would just be guessing that it would work, but it might be worth checking out.

Unfortunately that particular fitting (and the alternative versions from Tom etc.) won't work with this set up.

So I've come up with something we'll dub "The Pipebomb Skimmer". Hopefully the attached picture explains things a little better, or at least what i'm intending to do; basically make an enclosure for the skimmer/fuge's pump (located in the display aquarium) that will only draw water from the surface, through the saw teeth.

Tried it with a plastic container last night to test the theory and the surface scum was gone within 5 minutes, now floating around the tank or being skimmed.

If it works out i'll leave some directions for anyone else in this situation.
