Hi Randy - pm sent and Im sure your OK with my reasons

but without embarrasing you publically - I cant use a name like onedummhick - when 1/3rd of the username is clearly not accurate

this is posted for the benefit of others, who may think there was something wrong, or I saw something wrong in his name

his name does not reflect him, onehikk may be OK - the dumm part is wrong.

    it was a compliment.

I kinda guessed at the reason but didn't want to assume. The fact he chose "OneHikk" (without the Dumm) kind of gave it an impression. I just wanted to make sure the name didn't offend anyone.

OK. Well I pointed my powerhead at the surface of the water and ill see what it does.

The surface skimmer went inside the tank and was it's own unit. It didn't attach to the protein skimmer.

    Hi Meagan

there is no reason you should not use the surface skimmer/ filter you originally mentioned

but you might not need it, and that saves you money

everyone , including myself has just been offering ideas/ suggestions to deal with the surface scum, that involve using what you have already

Yes. It went inside the tank and let the surface film run over into the box. Inside the box (on the Ebay unit) was filtration to trap that filmy oil from the surface. If you bought it, you would have to clean it weekly or so to keep it clean. If you took a box that size and put it around your skimmer pump that you have now, and let the water "fall" into the box, you would see better skimmer performance. The reason is that the oils want to rise to the surface. If you let the surface water flow into the box, the skimmer pump pulls out of that box, then it makes it easier for the skimmer to remove them.

Sorry if I confused you. I think you will see a huge improvement with the powerheads that you aimed at the surface.

How can I put a box around my current skimmer pump and let it skim the surface? Its about 4-5 in down in the tank?
It's a HOB unit and then pump has to be submerged in the water?
    Sorry just confused.

Best thing to do would be to leave it the way it is, see how well the powerheads help it first.
