I have a lot of floating particles in my tank and my overflow does not suck them in. I was thinking of re doing my overflow and making it so it pulled water in about 4 inches from the waters surface.

I have seen when I feed my fish there is a oily film on the surface of the water, this would not get sucked into the sump if I reconfigured the overflow.

Would a lot of surface movement be enough to break down this film or is surface skimming really needed?

If the oily goo on the water's surface goes away after feeding all is well.. But the floaties in your tank could be 2 things.. Air or well just that floaties of some sort. If your tank is equiped pull and clean skimmer to make sure the pump is clean along with plumbing that may go to it. Along with return pump and tubing.

I know after i shut my pumps off for a H2O change i get wierd floaties and so on and it comes from the algae growth in side my Chiller water lines and long with tubing..

So hopefully that will guide you in the correct way to help out.
I know of the oily residue your talking about i have had it and i get mine to go away after a good water change and skimmer check, and pump clean ups. To get my flow back up to normal..

I hope this helps along with i hope some one else chimes in to help out where i left off..

    Best of Luck..
