    Yeah, OK. I thought that wire which appeared black to me in the pic, might have been a bare ground. Over time copper oxidizes and develops a green patina, much like rust on steel.

    So one of these two white wires has a red stripe, you said?

    The yoke is the metallic body upon which the entire receptacle is built. The ground screw usually is fastened into the yoke on the top or bottom, away from the hot and the neutral.

    Looks like either the green wire is the hot or the white wire is the hot...

    Either way it looks scary and I would carefully fasten the recep back into place and follow ReefSparky's advice concerning the 3-prong adapter and GFCI extension...

    ...or better yet call an electrician and have the recep replaced with a GFCI recep...
