I want to make a hood and suspend it over my 28 gal bowfront. The Ballast I have is a 65 watt 4 way made by coralife.
The bulbs are made by blue life and are 65 watt 10,000k.
The bulbs are 19'' long. I had them for my 65 gal. I figure I can just use two of them. One day light and one actinic.

I can buy smaller bulbs if this is going to be to much? But I was thinking as long as I suspend them high enough above the water they would be fine.

The inside diameter of the tank is 22'' across. How high above the water level should i hang them?

Six to eight Inches looks the best. Is this to much light? Is this going to fry my Corals?

Not all corals have the same requirements. Too much light can indeed kill a coral.

+1 to what Incognito said. Soft corals need a lot less light than SPS. LSP is in about the middle.

The reason a coral bleaches and loses it's pigment, is from too much light.

What kind of corals are we talking about? Soft, LPS or sps?

if properly acclimated any coral can live under halides, its just a matter of correct acclimation process. but if you dont acclimate then your right there would be some bleaching. also put soft corals on bottom and work your way up to the top with lps and high light sps

This is a false statement...not all corals can live under a 400w metal halide.

1.Bleaching will occur over time even, if acclimated. If there is too much par for the said coral, it will begin to bleach.
    2. If PAR(or PUR) is too high on the sandbed then once again, the coral will bleach, or melt in the case of softies.

this is entirely false, any soft and hard coral can live under halides with acclimations. in your case it must have been bad acclimation
