I honestly think your buddy has a really foul logic. Growing corals are growing corals whether it's 6 months or 6 years down the road. After 2 or 3 years, a coral doesn't change the way it uses light, it just gets bigger. I'm getting some downright amazing growth right now under my LED's. I'm not going to bother posting because my tank is only 6 months and my LEDs have only been in for a couple of months but nothing seems to be slowing down.....I remember when "they" said t5's wouldn't grow corals very well.

light is light. am I right? as long as the correct spectum and power needs are met,it doesn't matter the kind of light being used. be it the sun, MH, t5's, LEDs...

I do think there is much we don't know about the relationship between LEDs and corals. Clearly lots of folk are having much success. Just as clearly others aren't. Light sure is light, but how much of what wavelength lands where matters. Rather than having an argument about whether LEDs work, it would be really interesting to learn more about what causes the differences we do see.

My corals haven't grown much under leds at all, but I have mostly soft coral with 3 sps.

Since buying zoas, and other polyps they might have only grown one polyp since adding them 7 months ago. On the other hand my sps started growing immediately and doubled in size in a month.

It seems like sps really love led but soft coral and lps don't do to well under them. I see allot of sps reef tank pics under led but personally I'd rather see soft coral dominated tanks grown out from led since they seem allot harder to grow.

My zoas multiply like there's no tomorrow, as do my other softies. I started out with like 7 armor of gods and I now have a mini colony of them. I got those about 3 months ago. I run my LED's at fairly low power though and get good growth between both my sps and softies.

What leds do you have? I use diy crees for actinic and 30 watt multi chips for white. I did dim them recently for 2 days but it didn't do anything. My duncan actually didn't expand at all. I thought the less light the more the coral would expand to grab more light but it was the complete opposite.

People expecting changes overnight are why people have problems with products not working as people expect them to.... see the problem is people not the product ;)

People need to use common sense when using lights/ other products. I crank my LEDs, I actually run them at 100%.... my SPS love it  That said I didn't get to 100% in 2 days and I sure wouldn't expect anything to be happy if I did same as I wouldn't expect a miracle if they weren't happy so I turned them down for 2 days immediately. Theres a reason why they are called baby steps, but I guess some people need to learn to crawl 1st ;)
