I lost a kole tang last week and everything looked fine with my sixline and tomato clown. Today I noticed my clown covered in white super-fine salt looking spec. I am assuming SW ich or Crypt? I need a treatment that is reef safe as I have several zoas & LPS corals. HELP!

I think your best bet would be to set up a QT and treat the infected fish per instructions on medication. The medication can be harmful to corals, snails, invertebrates, and plants.

it also be marine velvet, its a finer powder while ich is more spotty. Good news is that you can treat it the same as ich, with some copper based med.

If I only had a QT that would be great, I got some Organic Ich Attach by Kordon, Says if reef save and invert safe, so I have my doubts but pretty much my only option at this point. That and frequent water changes. Will let you guys know if this stuff is any good. I'm hoping that since my clown is the only affected fist that I can tell this stuff will kill some of the non-hosting parasites and he is hardy enough to fight it off.

go to grocery store buy some fresh garlic. crush up a cloves and extract the juices only, soak your fish food with this for a lil and feed. do this every other day or so, untill the ich is gone. then repeat once a week for like 2 wks after its gone.

sw ich is not as bad a killer as fw ich, healthy marine fish can and will fight it on their own. but if its to far gone were its affecting gills, and breathing, then a qt and cooper treatment is a better solution.

had the same thing happen with a yellow tang in my tank. tangs are very prone to ich, thats why i will never own another.

my other fish got the ich, the tang was removed to qt and treated with quick cure, and the other fish got the garlic treatment, 6 months later havent seen the ich since. garlic wont harm your other reef inhabitants.

Thanks for the tip on the garlic. I will probably start do this a few times a week just as a preventative measure. After the lights came on this morning the clown looks a little better, (eyes not as cloudy, Skin looks better, I think he was scratching). I will continue with the organic ick attack for the recommended week, and start a garlic feeding schedule. I loved my kole tang, and am not sure If I will own another because of this experience, but he sure did keep my tank clean of algae!

Things are still the same today, I guess if there is no death thats a good thing. corals seem a bit irritated. They are just not opening as fast a they normally do but still look pretty good. Isn't funny how we will spend 14 bucks for ick meds, and risk a hudreds in coral to save a $20 clown fish, That reality just hit me like a ton-o-bricks!

I successfully used Ich Attack twice! Once from the arrival of my blue hippo... the other after adding a false idol. Both times worked with twice a day dosing and a temperature change to 84 degrees. Two weeks... gone! Anemone, shrimp, hermit crabs... everyone is perfect. No white spots... no harm to tank. Did a 20 percent water change after the two weeks. Hope this information helps... I also posted on my ich attack experience in a previous thread if you would like to read more.

Thanks Ryan, I have only been dosing once daily as reccomended, but it does say you can increase dose 1.5 to 2 times normal. Might start dosing twice daily, I am just worried about my corals.
