So I went to the LFS yesterday and picked up a chocolate chip star (which is the coolest thing in the whole world)... and I also got a majorly huge hermit crab. He's like the size of your fist, no joke. They both acclimated for like 2 hrs and have been doing great, both very active.

Question: Our yellow-tail damsel went missing, could big crabman have eaten him?
    -or-
Is it more likely that the damsel got eaten by the lionfishyfish? (eventhough he devoured 3 ghost shrimp yesterday)

    Thanks will post pictures shortly

My vote goes to the lionfish... but a hermit that big will eat other things if hungry.

What type of tank do you have? The chocolate chip starfish is not reef safe nor is the lion fish, just a heads up if you have corals or other inverts.

hermits are opertunists. They have been known to take snails, so think fish wouldn't be far from his plate especialy that big. But I am not saying lion couldn't do the same.

lionfish ate the damsel (they can eat anything up to their own size), starfish may eat the crab and other inverts, not too mention any future coral you may or may not be planning on adding or already have.

the starfish is nowhere large enough to eat the hermit, he is twice it's size easy. I'm giving credit to the lionfish, he had quite a bulge in his tummy this afternoon and has been hanging out "digesting" for a bit. but it could've been the hermit... especially because the night we added the him the fish disappeared and he hasn't been that active today and the lion has been in there for a couple days and hasn't even noticed the fish, bet the little bugger tried to hide in his shell (stupid damsel lol)

and no, we don't have any corals or other inverts (not gonna get any either, just the shark, maybe an angel, maybe a sting ray), but for now it's the now 3 damsels (2 domino 1 blue), black lion, ch chip star, and the huge hermit (damn i love him).

Anyways, does anyone else have a hermit this big? was it a mistake getting him? idk i think he is just awesome in all his hugeness, there was another about 3/4 his size, think i'm gonna go grab him tomorrow along with a sand sifter star.

One of my red hermits has grown like crazy. He's probably 3/4 inch wide and was one of the tiny 1/3 inch type a couple months ago. So I'll be watching him.

From the sounds of your tank, it's primarily going to be a predator tank.

Your big hermit is going to be for the most part a lazy trash compactor that will eat pretty much anything that comes his way that he can catch. You lion will eat anything smaller than him. Bad news for small fish.

Not sure what you plan to feed the sharkyshark or the lionfishyfish but if you feed them hefty meaty snacks it may be good to have something big to clean up :) Just my take. I've seen the huge hermits on the beach down here several times, same at the LFS. They're cool.
