I got hooked up on some Brightwell Aquatics Reef Biofuel. The LFS made it out to be great and said how much safer it was than the vodka method due to flammability issues.
I threw down 24 bucks for 500mL. I liked the results but this stuff is a very expensive organic carbon source.

Brightwell says "Biofuel is a an effective and safe replacement of the 'vodka method' of microbial activity".

I have been thinking about that and many people safely store vodka in their homes, even I have done this before with marginal ill effects.
I did not experience any flammability issues but rather cranial upset the next morning during the times I used to (briefly)store vodka.

I want to switch from the expensive stuff that I can't drink in a pinch to the cheaper stuff that I can. Are there any suggestions when switching?
I think I can should be able to just continue with my maintenance dose but I wanted to run it by the reef.

Toast the fishes and each take a shot?

well one of two things will happen:

If the carbon source in the Biofuel is similar to that of the ethanol in the vodka then it will only be a slight adjustment in the concentration of carbon source you are putting in your tank.
    or
If it is significantly different carbon sources then you will have to start all over from the beginning with the small doses and the building up and all...

Personally I would guess that the carbon source is close enough to the same so you will only have to worry about the concentration difference (the proof of the vodka). Either way IMO i would just start all over with the vodka to ensure there isnt an outbreak of bacteria :/

I agree, although I dose vodka(10 months),I never recommend it to anybody because it is very easy to overdose.Start with your recommended starting dosage and follow the guidelines.I like to put a little in the tank, put a lot in me,just to make sure the vodka is still good ;). Also when company comes over I like to set the water on fire, the guests love it and helps with heating the house (jjk).
