Switching tanks

    Heres the situation, 2 weeks from now i will be setting up my new system. all rock and corals from old 90 will be going into the new 90.I have 3 20 gal pails of premade salt ready. how much old water should I use or need to prevent a complete cycle or as little as possible. The new tank is BB so the old sand will be gone, damn stuff. I will be making more salt this week so add another 20 to be on the safe side. Also quickest way of removing bubble algae from rock be fore the move. Is there a method of doing this and any help would be appreciated.

    I would say saving as much water as you can is a good thing, but 50% should be good enough. Depending on the amount of LR you might be alright and avoid a cycle or at least keep it minimal. I started a 90 gallon about 6 months ago with 130# of LR and 30# LS the LR was pretty well cured and my ammonia levels didn't rise at all even with a fairly aggressive bio load for a new tank. I avoided a cycle.

    Heh, there is no prize for having set up a dozen tanks in a couple of years, Min. ::)
    As far as the bubble algae is concerned, I would carefully pick off all the bubbles I could first. (I use the end of a potatoe peeler) If a bubble breaks, scrape away the outer casing. Rinse the rock afterwards in old water to try to get all the spores off.
    I would save as much as possible at first, and then do several small changes about every other day for a week.

    I have about 135 lbs of rock that has been in this tank about 2 years.

    Hows its going anyway. Are you going to lotus,s barbeque for the final outing of the season.

    I'm going to be facing the same problem with getting rid of bubble algae when I swap out my 75 for the 210. I bought some new rock, so I figure the pieces that are real bad, I'll just work on after the tank is set up. Some of mine are really covered! :mad: Good luck with your switch!
