on a 55 with no SPS - 4 lamps is perfect IMO

width of tank is important when deciding number of lamps

1 lamp for every 3 inches of width is often quoted as perfect
my tank is 18 inches across so I use 6 lamps

in a tank 12 inches wide, 4 is perfect and will accomodate SPS
in a tank 15 inches wide , 4 is adequate IMO and provided the corals are under the lamps
    ideal for SPS also

If that, the longer used the less it is worth due to ballast wear and tear.

    +1 to Steve's post.

I would say used is should be around 200. Depending on the age of the fixture and the bulbs, you may need to buy new bulbs. New quality bulbs run about $20-$30 each. The ballast will also have wear and tear, like steve said.
