so the T5 bulbs currently in my fixture are getting old and its about time to replace them. I am wondering what kind of bulb to replace them with. I keep the T5's on 12 hours a day and the MH 6 so I want T5 bulbs that will make the tank look good on their own, but when the MH kick on not be too much light for my corals.

    2x 250W MH
    4x54 W T5
    tank 4x2x2

Try 2x ATI Blue Plus and 2x ATI Aquablue special or the Geisemann equivalents.
If you don't mind a 20KK look go all Blue Plus.

I would do 2 of these options.

    1st.
2x UVL super actinics and 2x UVL 454nm T5 bulbs

    or

    update: dingo recommended.
    2nd.
2x ATI BLUE PLUS 2xFIJI PURPLES

my understanding was fiji purple were daylight bulbs designed for when T5 is main lighting source. is that not correct? i love the look of them i just didn't think them an option

They are a daylight bulb but not a white bulb. Their color is a deep pink.

I also see fiji purple's are not recommend stand alone bulbs.. but in this case, it would be a nice addtion to his light fixture.

Agreed should add spectra not in the MH bulbs.

What kelvin are you going with for the MH?

    I use 2 80w ATI blue+ to go with my 2x 250 xm10000k halides.

Those ATI blue+ really do a nice job and don't get overpowered by the halides to make a nice blue hue.running fiji purple or aquablues would be pretty much a waste when the halides produce the white light better and t5s make blue light better and more efficiently.

My buddy runs 2 of the gman actinic + and 2 of the other Gman pure actinics with his 2 xm 250 10,000k mh and IMHO, the gman bulbs don't provide a pleasing enough hue to the halides. Maybe if those actinic+ were ATI B+, it would look better.
