Presently I have a CFL fixture on my 65 gallon tank. It has pivot hinges and it is clamped to the sides of the tank. I have a canopy over top of this which has a hinged top lid. It works for general feeding just to open the top and pivot the light fixture. When cleaning or servicing the tank I remove the canopy and just pivot the light fixture back out of the way. I am looking at replacing this fixture with a similar T5 fixture. My queston is why do most of the fixtures that I am looking at only come with fixed mounting legs or hangers? What do the rest of you do that are using a top canopy?

    I use a retrofit kit.

Do you mean a retro-fit kit which allows you to pivot the light fixture?

You might be able to DIY a pivoting design, but mine is mounted to the canopy top.

I have a few 2"x2" pieces of pine that sit on mounting brackets inside of my canopy. They strech the width of the canopy allowing me to mount my two fixtures that have legs on them.

So, to service or clean your tank you have to remove your fixture altogether?

No, my canopy opens from the front and back so the top is wide open. The front panel opens on its own also.
