So I'm looking for a 6x54 watt t5HO fixture for my 90 reef. It would be about 100 dollars cheaper to buy a 4 bulb fixture and a 6 bulb fixture. Would that work or would there be problems?

Oh, I meant to say it would be $100 cheaper to buy a 4 bulb fixture and a 2 bulb fixture, not a 4 bulb and a 6 bulb. A 4 and a 2 would probably be a lot of hassle, but if it would do the same job for 100 less it might be worth it.

I would just get the six bulb fixture. It will look a lot nicer and be less of a hassle when cleaning and such.

I don't know if you have ever order from Bulkreefsupply.com, but if you place three orders and do three reviews, you get permanent discounts. You could get a 6 bulb tek T5 fixture for $340 and an 8 bulb one for $350, only 10 bucks more, plus it's $70 off the retail price, just something to keep in mind.

IMO i would spend the $100 and get the 6 bulb, it will look at lot cleaner.
But if you were going to do a retro kit then i would save the money cause you wont see that it is two kits.

get the 6 bulb so you can do the front and back on actinics and set the lights on a schedule. with the 2/4 setup, you could have them on a schedule, but probably wouldn't be able to have actinics in the front and back on if that makes sense. Instead with the 2/4 fixtures you'd have a front + middle actinic on if you put the 4 bulb fixture setup in front, with the back 2 bulb fixture both daylights, right? You gotta think this through better, and it might be wiser to go w/ the 6 bulb if you can control it the way you want to.
