T5 vs. MH with T5 and LED supplement

I was wondering what everyones thoughts are for lighting.I used to run 2 175 watt mh on my 75 gal mixed reef before I sold it.Now I have another 75 gal and only doing sps and I have an 8x54 watt t5 fixture.At first when I set it up I was happy with it(only a month ago) but now I'm not so happy.The colors I used to have on some of the same corals is not the same.I'm thinking I want to go back to MH with t5/led supplement and to also simulate a 24 hr cycle.Every other reef tank I've had I used mh and it worked well for me.I just don't know if I'm completely sold on t5s.

Perhaps you have too much light or just the wrong bulb combo. Just for reference, here's a shot of one SPS-dominant with only 4 T5s. You can go back through his thread or send him a PM to find out what bulbs he's using.

Although I will add that some do best by using whatever has worked in the past.

 

I think t5 can work, thats what I use and my SPS grow. I've never used MH, but from what I've heard they may work a little better.

 

I use 4 T5HO on my tank as stated and keep them 28" above the sand. I strongly suggest cutting back and raising your fixture up to 24" to 30" above the sand. If you go T5HO and LED cut back to 2 daylight T5HO and 2 LED strips with 470nm and 440nm diodes or 3 to 1 T5HO to LED strips.
