because I want to do a retro in order to keep the hood over my bowfront, no fixtures for me..

I am not sure how long the tank is..
T5's will put out more light than a PC anyday

I have decided on the icecap T5 setup, just trying to find the best price..
the icecap 660x4 or 430x2 ballasts will overdrive the 54 watt 48" bulbs to approx 85 watts putting out more light than 8 bulb configuration using a TEK ballast or catfish lighting

I guess I will be the odd man out around here because I believe the time of the metal halide has past, gone the way of the washboard and carburator lol.Have a look at these t5 vho's.They may look a bit pricey but they are Ice cap electronic ballasts and come with VHO bulbs, see the UVL bulb choices.

I ended up with the icecap 660 with slr reflectors and waterproof endcaps. they fit very snuggly in my 72's canopy. I also got all uvl bulbs. 1 actinic white and 3 super actinics on accident. I am going to try to swap one actinic out for a GE bulb soon.
