If I urgently need salt and I can't afford to buy sea salt right now, can i use a little table salt mixed in water and filtered through carbon? I don't have any inverts. I also have some rock salt should that be the preferred choice:confused:

Ok thanks alot. I ordered instant ocean sea salt online but because of where I live, it would take a while for it to get here and buying one bag in Trinidad is the equivalent of buying about 4 bags in the states. So that's why I would prefer to buy it online. I just needed salt urgently because my SG is .018 a bit low so I was contemplating a quick alternative::)

you dont want to raise it to quickly anyway you need to raise it slowly or you could send the system into shock

IMO .018 is not dangerously low, especially with no inverts. Do you have corals? If it is fish only don't worry, just slowly bump it up when you get the salt in. In your situation you might want to think about keeping extra of everything on hand, including salt. That way if there is a true emergency you are never stuck in a tight spot. I keep a spare of a lot of things around just in case of an emergency, and I have a cheap fish store only 45 min. away.

So are you saying it's okay to use either the table or rock salt to increase it gradually. Sorry my brain is not where it should be today::)

Don't know about your setup, but if you could allow evaporation to lower the operating water level a bit, and maintain your filtration, you can raise your SG and hold out till the order arrives in the mail...???

No corals and no inverts. I'm just kind of bombarded and I have no clue because about 2 days ago, I checked my amonia level and it read 1.5 and my skimmer isn't producing any waste at all. so i added carbon. no drop in amonia. so I've now decided that I want to do a water change but no salt and that's why I asked about the table salt. The next step it to mod my lame sea clone.:-/ Could this spike in amonia be caused by my decision about three days ago to add API Stress Zyme to the tank? I added this to increase the efficiency of my bio filter.

I contemplated this, but then, the water level would be too low for the pumps to work properly:-/

it shouldnt have caused the spike. did you add any new livestock or live rock recently. is anything dead in there? why did you add the stress zyme to start with...is the tank new?
