You are right to want to save your rock. If you have the time, clean it before you leave... it won't smell so bad when you get back. There is an old thread with a tried and true cleaning method. I recommend that you look over it and consider giving it a try. I posted the results of my cleaning at the bottom of that thread as well as others have....

    Thank you for your service.

you will just have to cycle it again, not that big of a deal. It's cool that you got credit for your fish, I don't think any of my lfs would take the fish for credit

Definitely save it. I started my tank with mostly dry rock from the lfs with some live rock seeded throughout it. Thank you for your service to our nation. I send you my best wishes.

First off, Thanks for your service, whether you agree or disagree does not matter. What matters is our Troops coming home safe and sound and having accomplished their mission! Good luck to you!!!!!!

Yes, you could put it in the ocean, but it would have to be off shore somewhere and you'd have a heck of a time retrieving it. It would cost more in the long run than to just nuke it, scrub and let it dry out in the sun, then box it up. When you do that(box it up) make sure it's totally dry and maybe put some silica packets in it too, that will help to absorb and minute moisture left over. When you unpack it, it should be like base rock.
