It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Where are you going on your vacation?

Removing corals is a lot more trouble than it's worth. Most common dive locations have heavy fines for removing corals/inverts/fish or damaging the reef.

Unless you have the ocean in your backyard, have the proper permits and can provide the best care for anything collected, you should stick with collecting from the LFS and vendors on line.

Agreed with above. If you are going out of country you couldn't legally bring anything back to the U.S. anyway-

Also- anything you collect wouldn't survive!

Just leave it alone unless you have proper permits and methods of collection and shipping.

Also be prepared for a firestorm of a thread here if you are going to disagree with my opinion. I'm willing to bet NO ONE here will encourage you to simply jump into the sea and start snapping off pieces of coral.

Can't agree more - Please, please don't attempt this. So much can go wrong including fines entering back to the U.S or Canada. take pictures - better to invest in a cover for your camera so you can take it diving :)

Aside from the legal barriers - the logistics of collecting down there are also preventative.

How would you keep you coral alive whilst on the cruise? You would either have to set up a holding tank in you room (yeah right) or do water changes every few hours (yeah right). The only other possibility is if you somehow bag and return your sample (again probably in violation of a litany of statutes - some likely Federal) and ship it the same day it was bagged.

I'd agree with Corailline and just purchase from your LFS or online vendors.

I understand it would be cool to have your own coral that you collected - but the truth is you do not have very much experience in wild coral harvesting and would likely do more harm than good until you have gone through the proper training/certification/education to be recognized by some governing body as an individual legally allowed to do so.

Keep contaminates in mind as well. While the water might look crystal clear thru those googles, there is abolsutely no way to tell what sort of man-made pollutants are in the water. Even a few ppm of who knows what can be fatal to an entire tank when condensed into a tank sized enviroment.
