So I'm thinking about adding a lion fish to my predator tank. Can I get some opinions on which lions are best and why? I'm looking at putting him in a 150 gallon tall. I've had a volitans before, but I'd like to know if someone likes another kind better and why.

I would say anything but Volitans or Miles. They are so common they are cookie cutter to me. Also, invasive in the Caribbean. Not a fan.

I like the dwarf's and other unique ones.

I suppose the first question I'd have before recommending a lionfish would be which other fish/inverts are currently in residence, and/or what others do you plan to add?

Lions generally don't do well with non-planktonic feeding triggers (Rhinecanthus, Balistes, Balistapus, Balistoides), large species angels, and puffers, so if you have or plan to have any of these, scorps aren't in the cards.

Ornamental shrimp and "normal" crabs (non-hemits) will become dinner, as will any fish that's not about 3/4 the size of the lion.

Lions are usually the victims of aggression rather than the aggressors...unfortunately, they've been labelled as "aggressive" fish, and nothing is farther from the truth. Altho lionfish do tolerate fast-movers, they will tend to stay out of the way (perch more) with them in residence.

With that in mind, let us know what your stocking plans are.

I like the looks of the Mombasa the best, Antennata the second. Can't help experience wise as I haven't owned a lion but definitely will once I get a larger tank.

I have had volitans and dwarf fuzzy lions..I think I would have to go with the vols because of the long flowing fins.

A yellow dwarf fuzzy lion is what I will get when the time comes, unless I find a nice looking red fuzzy. Fu Manchu is always a winner, and full of personality too.

I had a volitan and he begged like a dog. Every time I would walk in the room where he was, he would shoot up to the corner of the tank with this mouth open. He was eating frozen silversides.
