Advised to not get the cleaner shrimp...apparantly sensitive to small changes in nitrate and ammonia levels.

    Bah!
You don't have any ammonia do you?
    What are your nitrates?

No nothing like that...the guy at TropiQuatics in Lombard, IL was just being cautious with me. Boy I love those guys! Of the 4 shops I've visited they are by far the most helpful and honest.

Your wet/dry could be a nitrate factory. Might wanting to think of getting rid of the mediaand use just for circulation.

I don't have any media in there. Just the blue fabric filters.

I'm sorry I don't get it. What traps the particles then? Also water tests: sg 8.2, nitrites 20, nitrates 0, ammonia 0

Your skimmer will remove dissolved solids.

I believe your pH is 8.2, but the nitrites are in the toxic range for inverts (crabs, snails, etc,) if your reading is correct.  With ammonia at 0 I would suspect that that is your nitrate reading.  What test kit are you using?

I have removed all sponge media from my tanks and the nitrates are way down, water clear as a bell.  I scrape the glass and turkey baste the detritus from the rocks when I clean and the skimmer skims it away from the water column.

I use the FasTest master kit. I'll remove the sponge media from the wet/dry filter. How about the canister vac? No inverts in the tank.
