That is a general rule for all fish. Fish see shapes a lot better and like us can not see color at night or low lighting.

Granted we have always see rules bent or even broken at times.. ;D I have a Hippo Tang & a Yellow Tang in my 90gal without a single issue.

Great thanks for the help I always wanted more than 1 tang and was a little disappointed when my lfs said it was not good to mix them. I thought the Powder blue was the least aggressive of the bunch.

Poweder blues are very high strung fish. same with the achilles and eventhe powder browns. the browns are more Hyper than mean. but the one I had did bully a new tang. but stopped in a few days. the purple carried on for a week or more. My last purple was 1/2 teh size of my Sohal and was the troublemaker of the bunch.

Yeah my Friend has a blue and is not as aggressive as what we were expecting. That being said you can never tell, each fish is like its own person you never know how they will react.

That being said you have to understand the risk, but in the end you should be fine.

this is mostly in part to the fact that they do not have similar body shapes, purple tangs and yellow tangs both have very similar body shapes so therefore it would be difficult to keep them together, same with powder blues and powder browns and achilles and alot of others.

I don't believe it has anything with body shapes. There are compatibility charts online (and I think maybe here on 3reef???). Check them out.

fish cannot see colors as well as they can see the outline of a fish or its body shape, if it is similar to theirs they think they are being attacked territorially. and therefore will be aggressive.

I keep two tangs in my 75G with no issues. I introduced my yellow tang first, then about 18 months later a blue hippo with no issues at all. As long as their body shapes are different, I would not worry about it. If body shapes are the same add 3 or more at a time. This helps spread out aggression and puts all the fish at the same level territory wise.
