I plan to upgrade my 55G reef in 1-1.5 years once I get out of college to either a 90, 110, or 120G. My LFS has a very nice 2" yellow tang would it be alright in my 55G for that stent of time?

yeah, i kept a 4 inch yellow tang in my 29g for a few months, but it was way to big for that tank tho....you will be fine with a 2 inch for a while, although people are going to get mad at you. but i wouldnt worry to much about it IMO

    is the 55 a 4ft tank?

IME a smallish yellow Tang would be OK in a 4ft tank for 12 - 18 months if not longer to be honest

Ive kept these in 4ft tanks and found them to be hardy, and not prone to stress related parasite outbreaks like some of the fancier members of the family are
( I would never advocate putting a gold rim, powder blue, naso, powder brown, etc in a 4ft as these fish even when they are really small are ich magnets )

I have a 3-4" yellow tang in my 55 and he seems happy. I've not had any health issues and he eats well. There is no set requirement on these fish, it does depend largely on the tank size, but also filtration, other fish in the tank and size of the fish.

The tank is a standard 4ft 55G. I just see so much conflict regarding appropriate tank sizes for these guys, most Ive seen states somewhere around 100G as optimal. The largest full reef I will probably ever own is a 4fter basically just due to lighting costs. So I guess my other question would be, is a larger scale 4ft tank most likely a 90 or 120G appropriate for the life of the fish?

As for now the only other fish in there are 2 black occelaris. Tank has been up since December and Im trying to get a finalized stocking plan. I have seen a number of members here with the yellow tangs in 55-75G tanks so thought it might be worth looking into. As said this reef is definatly to be upgraded once I graduate and find a more permanant location, probably should have went with atleast a 75G now but I was given the 55G tank for free and decided to use it instead of buying one.
