tang school

Just wondering if tangs of the same shape will school together if they are added at the same time? Let's say for example a yellow,purple,scopas,annd a mustard tangs.not certain ill be adding all of them to my 225( for the ext few months till I step into the big big build on to 500ish).I have a healthy purple now just wonnderinng about adding others if they will school or not

 

I have never seen my tangs school together in any of my tanks. they seem to all go about their own business from the small ones in my 75 to the larger ones in my 180. that said, they do sometimes all occupy the same end of the tank together.

as for same shape, adding at the same time is usually the safest way to avoid the most agression, however with an established purple, be prepared for a good deal of fighiting for the first few days lasting up to 2 weeks. my purple was the last added and it showed alot of agression to an established Sohal who could have cared less but put him in his place.

I have seen three yellows together in a 225 but they never schooled.

 

No, they will not school in your tank.

In the wild, fish school to avoid danger/predators. Generally in tanks fish will not school unless they sense danger, which your tangs will not.

I'm not even sure if the variety of tangs you mentioned would school in the wild - my thought is that they would not. But definitely not in your tank.

 

I have not seen all different types of tangs school, but I have heard of and seen like 4 or 5 yellow tangs schooling.

 

i have only seen tangs school in an aquarium at the denver aquarium, they have a large school of powder blues but your tank just wouldnt have enough size and they would need to be the same species. also the school at the aquarium has excess of 50 tangs in it so that would be unrealistic im thinking in a 225
