Tangs are herbivores that except meaty food. They're not naturally carnivores. I have a few books on Tang nutrition and this is cut an pasted from Liveaquaria.com on what a tang should eat :
Although the Yellow Hawaiian Tang will eat meaty foods along with the other fish in the aquarium, it is important the Yellow Hawaiian Tang is offered plenty of marine based seaweed and algae. This will strengthen its immune system, reduce aggression and improve overall health. Offer dried seaweed tied to a rock or use a veggie clip, and feed at least three times per week. Sea Veggies, Seaweed Salad and Ocean Nutrition are all ideal products and are very easy to use.

tangs will switch between foods but they resist at first. some people said there tangs show a lack of interest in the nori, but if you refuse to provide them with another source of food they will eat it. i go through this battle every time i switch between purple and green nori.

it is but im sure they is a difference between the quality of the food and regular plant matter.
i willing to bet its like the choice between a taco and a fresh salad, both have lettuce in them but one is better for you.

when you try this persistence is the key, don't put a whole meals worth of nori in the tank until you know some ones eating it. change it out every day because it will fall apart.

I think it is....especially when you have a fish that is new or picky. There is 4 formulas I think...I use the Original for my reef. There is a predator (not chopped big enough for my golden), a herbivore, fish only and a coral food (so 5)

But the ingredients for Original is: Shrimp, scallop, oyseter, clam, squid, octopus, perch, green nori, red nori, mysis, krill, brine shrimp, red cyclops, fish eggs, oyster eggs, golden pearls, broccoli, carrot, garlic, selco, carophyll pink (??) Dunalliella salin, rotifers, and baby brine shrimp

It is 19.99 at my LFS for a good size bag...and IMO a good deal as it feeds your fish and your corals.

I saw a couple references to to Julian Sprung's purple seaweed. I also buy the two little fishies brand of seaweed but I don't care for the purple because it flakes away so fast once you put it in the tank. The green stays in tact and doesn't end up all over the tank. Is there some sort of nutritional difference between the colors?

I have always used raw broccoli and I have never had a single case of Lateral line to harm my fish and I have seen broccoli to do far more to help cure the problem then any sea weed or algae sheets , Romain Lettuce is not even in the ball park and Ice Burg lettuce is 100% worthless its just full of water and that the fish have plenty of. It may take them a few days to become accustomed to the broccoli But once they do it will go fast and it can hang on a clip for days and days with not signs of breaking down like lettuce and algae .
