    Hi there,
how many tangs would be ok in an 84g?

Would a Blue Tang and Yellow Tang be ok?

I believe the tank is 60x18x18.

    Thank you

The common rule of thumb would be one inch per gallon. But rules are for breaking – its just an estimate. Depends on your set up and if it can handle the bio-load. Put some time into fish compatibility as well.

Here is an article on the subject:

And this is a fish data base that you can use for compatibility and all sorts of fish info:

based on those dimensions you should be OK. Just remember that tangs grow fast and they are messy so 2 of them will limit the number of other fish, even if you get them small. It also depends on your filtration system. I have a yellow and blue tang,I've had them for 1.5 years, the hippo is getting big and recently he has been picking on the yellow

I think you need to keep the body shapes different for tangs to get along in one tank.

There are exceptions though, but thats a good general rule to follow!

IMO, you should be ok. It's good that the tank is longer.

A blue tang will outgrow a 60" tank. I would say a yellow tang and maybe a kole or another smaller tang, but thats about it.

Also, 1" per gallon is not a good rule of thumb for salt water aquariums. That is an old idea from freshwater that simply does not work in reef/salt tanks. Everyones tank is different and they all have different requirements. What else is in the tank, what equipment do you have (skimmer, carbon...)?

I have both in a 72gallon. They are fine. I know that the Yellow tang will becom teritorial with tangs of the same color.
