yea that is the conclusion that i have come to... the naso is not going to make it i dont think... probably the last fish i quarantine.... my lfs will let me put fish on hold for a couple days too... so im just going to do that and make sure they're there for atleast a week at the lfs then straight to an acclimation box in the dt.

This is not "QT", as the point of QTs are that new fish are put in them for ~4 weeks before adding to the DT. What you did is essentially put him in a hospital tank (which is fine BTW).

If a QT is properly setup for the fish that is going in it, it actually should be a far less stressful environment than going right into the DT with all kinds of curious fish and inverts to scare it :-/

Not a good practice IMO, but again everyone has had their own success doing things their own way. I have had new fish on 2 different occasions go into my QT (a fully setup 46BF with live rock, skimmer, powerheads, etc) looking perfectly fine, and then 1-3 days later be covered in Ich cysts. Both eventually died while in QT. I feel if I had added them to the DT, they would have put all of the fish in my DT at risk as well. There is no point in subjecting your established fish to disease when you can minimize it with a QT.

Again, just my personal thoughts and experience. YMMV.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !

I agree with Marshall. Putting the tang in the DT and then into a QT was where things went wrong. Tangs become symptomatic with marine ich if you look at them the wrong way. Your current DT has marine ich in it more than likely.

Marshall and Cheryl know my feelings on QT. I believe if as Marshall says you have an adequate QT meaning proper filtration/aeration,a good maintenance regimen while in use, plenty of hiding places, and of course an adequate size QTfor the kind of fish/invert. QT's can be usefull. In my case I have never used one but I usually stock my tanks VERY lightly(probably the most important of all),and have a great LFS who has there own QT sytem. QT's if used/setup properly can be quite helpfull.

ok... thanks for the links to the other threads... I basically tore down my 24g angry crustacean( big pistol shrimp, mean crabs, and stone crab) setup and was using that as my qt and was going to from now on... but i removed all the sand and the rock as I was under the impression that is should be BB and no LR... but I cut some pvc pieces trying to give some cover... but i think that is important and i need to either black out the sides or add some LR or something for cover to hide and reduce stress...

I pulled out the established fish... the only reason it lasted a week was the awesome shape it was in prior... it was starving to death... couldnt watch any longer... was so emaciated.. had to put it out of its misery...

clearly money wasnt my driviing force I just killed a naso for a brown mimic tang... lost my ass on that one... ( trying to laugh about it but its still not funny yet!)

Ok so i need to read up on the setup of qt... I really love the concept and I think ive just had some bad luck here in the past two weeks.

first I got a little kole (1.5") and put him in qt and treated with formalin... cleared right up eating like a pig... then on the third day of no symptoms (6th day since shipment to lfs).... layed on its side and never got up... someone told me it could have been Cyanide'd when they were trying to catch it and apparently they just drop dead around a week after? Hard to believe it would have lasted as long as it did but hey it took the blame off me so i was hasty to accept the reasoning?? Doesnt matter the naso would have killed it immediately after introduction to DT...
Learned alot here... tang's are ****s to other tangs...one per system or all at once i think!

Sorry to hear that Mike. I had an Orange shoulder Tang that I really liked, and he looked perfect the first 2 days. Even made immediate friends with my other 3. NO aggression from the very start. He was swimming with them, eating with them, from day 1. No signs whatsoever of any stress. The third day, I came home to him lying on his side. 2 hrs later gone. That one HURT. Not for the money, but I REALLY liked him. As I said earlier, Some acclimate, and some don't. JMO.

One other thing, the way I add them, is just drip acclimate when I get home in a one gallon container, changing scooping out the water every 15 min for one hour. Net them out of the one gallon, and in they go. Discard the old water. Out of the last 7 tangs, I only lost the Orange shoulder. Don't be discouraged, it happens.
