I've got a 20gal display that's a little over a year old. I've got a couple of clowns who insist on hosting in my candy coral which is really bothering the coral. I added a toadstool to try to entice them over, which worked for a while, but they've gone back to the candy buttons. I've got an extra 20 gal tank siiting around that I'm thinking of adding to the system so that I could move the clowns over there with the toadstool or move the candy corals so the clowns can't bother them anymore, or move the clowns and get an anemone. Would adding to the system have any drawbacks? Would adding an anemone be a problem if it's in a seperate tank? Any thoughts, suggestions, advice would be greatly appreciated.

Just curious, how are they bothering the candy cane? My Tailspot Blenny is always resting on my candycanes, and it never seems to bother them. Their feeding tentacles are never out during the day anyways.

Anemones in a smaller tank is a big gamble. They will travel, and may end up killing other corals. So doing a tank just for the clowns and an anemone would actually work out just fine.

They like to swim in and out between the heads and bounce on top of them, so everywhere the clowns go, the heads are pretty retracted. I've got a dwarf lion that will rest on them occasionally, but doesn't bother them like the overactive clowns.

Just to be clear, I want to make the new tank part off the same system, so two tanks, one sump, same water circulating through all. Anemone still ok in seperate tank from existing reef?

Yes, as long as there is no chance of the anemone getting sucked into a powerhead intake.
