just a brief update and an enquiry

I will be adding 1- 1.5 mm argonite sand (not live sand) to my set up at weekend

I plan to rinse the sand using the 10 gallons of aged tank water I remove from my tank at water change time
does this sound a better idea than rinsing with RODI water or would either be a good enough option?

Since the sand isn't live, there's no particular need for a rinse with saltwater (to maintain life). You could go either way. I don't think it matters.

sand added this evening again after lights out when all the corals are nicely closed down, giving me more free space to work in and less chance of covering them in sand

Ill describe my method as it might be usefull to anyone else who needs to add sand to an existing set up

tools required - 1 inch PVC pipe, Funnel and a plastic jug with a spout

the PVC pipe needs to be maybe 2 or 3 inches longer than the depth of your water
just taped the funnel into the pipe, washed the sand in RODI water a half jug full at a time
and then poured it into the funnel and moved the pipe about to spread the sand

result, reasonably even layer without having to spread it about and negative sand on any rocks or inverts (OK I had to go hands in, to gently waggle and then lift 2 snails of the base)
