If I were to plumb in a dedicated eel tank into my existing system (75dt ~20 or 30 sump) could I get away with going a little smaller since it'll all be his? Thinking snow flake since they tend to be the smallest to my knowledge. Long as he has enough to hide in right?

No thoughts? Let me clarify, I'm wondering what minimum size tank I should consider. Think snowflake said around 55 or 75 but again curious if I could go smaller with a dedicated tank that's incorporated into the larger picture.

You could probably get away with smaller since they're not very active swimmers, they do grow quickly though and are large eaters so would put a burden on your system.

I would say no smaller than a 55. Mine is a little over 2 feet. The problem isn't space but rather that they are very messy eaters. A bigger tank would be more stable for the eel.

well again this would be plumbed into the rest of my system, essentially giving me an overall volume of around 150 gallons (assuming i add a 50gal tank). Thinking about doing a cube of some kind at this point. Ideally 2x2 which is just shy of 60 gallons. Would go smaller if needed. Probably throw in an urchin to help clean up after him. I'd imagine the larger crustaceans would be fine too, long as they can't fit them in their mouth right? I originally wanted to find a globe bowl type thing. Unfortunately, aside from the fact that what i've found to date probably wouldn't hold water long term, they're also not cheap... Just got done building a scrubber so i'll have to save up and keep an eye open on craigslist. Scrubber was cheep but i switched all my plumbing over to pvc while i was at it so... not so cheap but hey, it looks nicer.
