my brother just started a 110 gal exactly one week today and he already has brown algea almost covering his sand bed, water still tests good ( hasn't cycled yet) but why so fast and why so much? there's no natural sunlight hitting the tank, but he does keep his lights on for 12 hrs / day. please let me know?

Agreed Luna, lights are totally worthless during the cycle. Turn em' off for 3 months, then worry about algae when you can actually add something to help take care of the problem.
