65 gallon tank just converted from freshwater Cichlid tank. This week I have gotten it all emptied, cleaned, and re-filled. Got my new sump setup and running. I bought a few pieces of live rock and dry rock today and added those with some live sand. One question I have is why is the inside of my glass covered with something, I'm not sure what, salt? or sand? does not feel gritty like sand. It scrapes of with a blade scraper. And next question, how do you prevent "salt creep" on the stuff above or outside the tank, like the light fixture mounts and such?

It sounds like you had a calcium precipitation. It happens when you raise calcium levels too fast, which can happen if you mix the salt too quickly since reef salt has calcium added. I did the same thing and it was a PITA to get it all cleaned off. Buy plenty of razor blades, you will need them.

I would guess the stuff on the inside of the glass is just small particles from the sand. it will go away with time. As for salt creep for me isnt something i have had to really worry about. you could help prevent it with a glass top, but this will also cut down on light penetration.

If you wanna avoid salt creep~don't let it get wet lol. If it gets wet just wipe it off right away. That's pretty much it. As for the stuff on the walls/glass, does it have color?

The color resembles white calcium/or lime, if that makes sense?

+1 for all the responses for the white stuff.....For the salt creep, I take a glass of my RO water and pour it where the salt wants to come up. Then dry it off. I used to take tank water and do the same thing, until I realized that "Hey moron, you're using wet salt to clean up dry salt" So after using the RO water I noticed that I hardly have to ever clean up after the salt anymore.

how thick is your sand bed? next step is to let the tank cycle, be ready to stare at rocks for the next 8-10 weeks
