You might try smelling each bottle at the cap to see if/which one is the culprit. Also, pick up each bottle and check for a wet ring on the surface where the bottle sits. Health concerns are of course paramount, but if the bottle is evaporating liquid (water,) that would make the contents more concentrated, and depending on what we're talking about, it could throw off test results (if it's reagent for a test), or cause you to overdose your tank if it's a med. It's in your best interest to try and figure out from where the smell comes.

Agreed on trying to find the chemical smell.

Cycling LR also has it's own smell. Which isn't really a good thing  Once the tank is cycled and the rock is no longer dying, etc, the tank should be mostly odor free. Running carbon will help with water clarity and quality, and get rid of any smell you don't want.

3 of the worst smells in the hobby in my opinion are: skimmate (gunk in a protein skimmer), phytoplankton, and a dead Turbo snail. For some reason, when snails die, they smell absolutely horrid :freak3:

    Echos my feelings as well

I completely agree. Caught my wife using windex on the glass doors about a foot away from the tank. Spray going everywhere. I could see it mist into the tank. I think I shreeked. Did the Prime thing right away. Luckily, no death ensued. Brings up an important subject. SW tank educating those who live with you......

I watched my girlfriend spraying Windex right ON her uncovered 10g nano. Heavily. Windex flying RIGHT INTO it. Heavily.

She was oblivious. "I do this all the time!"

Unbelievable, but nothing seemed to suffer.

Sorry, straying from topic ... my house is smelly and mildewy from my last flooding incident ... :-[

Looks like there is a difference of opinion on the chemical smells. When you smell something you are taking particles of that item into your body, into your lungs and thus into your bloodstream. Chemicals may be inert in and of themselves but when mixed in air-vapor god only knows what you end up with. I mixed Cascade and liquid dish detergent – I thought my lungs were on fire.

I, like most of us here, have quiet the extensive collection of chemicals for my tanks. Some in use others no longer used but for some reason I hang onto things. There is no smell at all, is this an exception? When I say chemicals I am considering everything I have for the tank, from test kits to additives. Anyway, chemical smells are not good in my opinion – and what’s a decent forum if not full of different opinions :)

Now, if someone can solve the heavy chlorine stench that emanates from my pool chemicals I’d be a happy camper ! I had the brainstorm to place them all in a tight sealing Tupperware tub…yeah, bad call on my part. That was concentrated death when I opened it – I surprised I can still see, it was like peeling a million onions all at once !

Prime really stinks. I use it from time to time and the stink is strong.

Algae STINKS. It has a strong pungent, sweetish smell. I can't stand it. When i was moving from my 30 gal to the 55 gal and i was pulling out the sand that stuff almost made me puke.

    Snails stink when they die.

The tank will have an ocean smell when you walk in the room. I get it every night I open the door.

Maybe salt water is hitting something and corroding it and causing the smell?
