    LHA =long hair algae

Keep in mind theres sevral kinds , some are harder to get rid of than others.
Also keeping your lighting off at this time will help greatly.

Brown diatome algae is a nuisence and that stuff can spring up even in the most mature tanks.

Algae is generally the arch enemy of ever ones tank beacuse so many things can cause outbreaks.

    --Update--

Day 024 of the Expedition, we noticed some odd things in the environment...
... Just joking. lol, a lil bit of humor, I suppose. The brown algae (LHA i think?) seems to be clearing up on the sand after a quick re-angle of the jet-head-water-pusher-thing. :p We have stopped using the PurpleUp for about 3 days now (or 4?). We also observed our Neon Goby (which Mike decided to name "Cold Trickle"...) cleaning off Scrappy (our larger striped damselfish). Most of the time Scrappy and Coco (our smaller damsel fish) seem to get along well, they swim side-by-side and seem happy and curious. Once or twice i've seen Scrappy chase Coco for a split second then stop. We are considering looking into finding proper homes for both of them, since we now know they tend to get aggressive/territorial. Maybe our LFS will take them?...
Our smaller snail, now free of the algae that was growing on his shell happily cleans the back glass of our tank, and McLovin (the bigger snail, which I think may have pooped "logs" in our tank... see pictures below) seems to have found a good spot, he is resting between the glass and the jet-stream-water-pusher-thinggie. However, he did a great job of "cleaning" off a branch of the brown algae... Yay! ;D

Anyhows, here are some pictures of interesting things in the tank.... =)

Hmm, some log, poop-looking things were reccently discovered in the tank...

also, noticed some red dot thinggies on the branches... >.> I think it's good lol.

I like Local Head Shop better...LOL

See I told you he would be trucking soon enough, I have a really large turbo about 1.5" that I have to scrub once in a while or at least I did, he now stays clean curtesy of the 2 rock urchins I have. and clean it is, in fact he is white now!

Need Help with a imp. question!

LoL gazog, I do too! Although it would be scary to think where a Local Head Shop would get all of their inventory!!

On a side note... I saw a really good priced 55-gallon tank on craigslist and I (ash) am thinking about picking it up and starting another tank in the living room because Mike wanted to get a Snowflake Eel, and from what I've been reading about them... they can get aggressive towards other fish/inverts in a reef tank... and may get kinda big too 0.0. I did however have a question, because one source I was reading said they need a minimum of 45 gallons, another said 50, and a third I was reading said 125 gallon? I know as a general rule of thumb, the bigger the better as far as the tank goes, but the 55-gallon is what I can afford right now since we bought the other one we started so reccently... Do you think that it will do for a small snowflake eel? (We eyed one at the LFS that was about 7.5 inches long, and about .75 inches wide... I know that they said it can grow to about 3ft long...)

If we do get that tank, I think that the only other things I would look into putting in it would probably be either a volitan/dwarf lionfish OR an angler/leaf fish of some sort, or maybe a Longnose Hawkfish.... and cleaner snails....

And input would be GREAT! :D

    Water Reading Update

Ayo again guys! We're still seating back and watching Mother Nature do her work inside our lil' paradise;D ... but when we were taking the readings a while ago we noticed that everything; Salinity, Phosphate, Nitrate, Carbon Hardness were all reading good but the Calcium was reading a bit high according to the test kit. Reading 740mg/l (ppm) instead of between 400-500:eek: We are looking up more info about it now but of course wanted to ask the experts (all you great guys) if this was a radical reading for a cycling tank of 1 month.

Today was pretty hot for the 4th of July even up here in Alaska, getting over 80 degrees:p We also noticed that the temp of our tank was almost to 83 degrees. We did what we could to take the heat from the room with an extra fan and went easy on the daylights for a sec to see if that would help. Everyone likes their day at the beach but we want to make sure our founding fish don't get too hot in there :)

Hope everyone is having a great holiday, ttyl and ty for reading and helping us along the way. We really appriciate it;D

I don't know. I have a little bit of the same thing on my fiji rock. when I bought the rock it was green and some what calcified. after curing it looked sparkly clean but then the sludge appeared. For a while they were support for a larger reef and didn't recieve any light or flow. If you hear anything let me know... too much time and money invested to have it all die.
