Well 3reef I need to vent for a minute. I have 3 sons and one of my red headed children may have crashed my tank tonight. Time will tell. Heres what happened. I put all my children down for the evening and my 3 year old (almost 4) decided to get up about 2 hours later. I wont know the full extent of what he did but i heard the TV turn on in my fish tank room. Not good. I got up to investigate. I was asleep. What i found was furious, sad, nurvracking, worried all bundled together. When my son saw me he ran. ran fast, he knew he was in trouble. My lower part of tank stand doors were open because we are fighting a heat wave here and i have a fan blowing across my fuge to keep the tank cool. I found all my mangroves pulled up, all my fuge live rock and my macro algae and calpera was pulled up and place in a bucket i have next to the tank. The fuge light was pushed down in to the water and heres the worst my calcium, dkh buffer, and magnesium were opened and poured into the tank. So what to do from here.

First i looked for my child's safety. Made sure he was OK and didn't ingest anything or electrocute himself.

Second, not I am in recovery mode. Planing on large water change in the morning. I still need to mix the salt and get the water parameters good.

Third, If I can recover my tank and prevent it from crashing I have to childproof my fish tank room.

    Well thanks for listening.

Hey. Sorry to hear this. Yes water change! Did the child pour the whole contents of each bottle and how much was in each bottle? Kinda like an OD........

I'm not so worried about the DKH and magnesium they were almost empty. But the calcium supplement was near full. Now about 1/4 bottle left. I have transfered all of the corals over to my q tank and caught a couple of fish but the rest will have to wait it out. I had 15 gallons already prepped for a water change and I already did the water change for tonight. I prepped another 15 for tomorrow and I'm going to look into my parameters in the morning. I need to go by my LFS and get some calpera for the fuge. Mangroves were savable.

first, i would test all levels to see what they are at. Heres my guess as to what will happen...
Ca= will make water milky but will precipitate out once the alkalinity drops
dkh= if it gets too high this may bother corals... softies will shrivel first, then lps and finally sps. It will go down on its own or with a waterchange since dkh of our rodi water is usually low
mg= usually doesnt have much of an effect on corals. may bother slightly.

best bet with the fuge is to see if the mangroves will live, make sure hydrogen sulfide was not exposed to your tank, and then hope the calupera didnt release spores while ripped up.

    Good luck and sorry :(

probably too late for this but turn the sump off and test DT parameters to see how bad it is... make enough saltwater for a 50% change as soon as the water is ready.
If your lucky you caught him before the chemicals disolved into the water.

Good luck and sorry for your troubles :(

edit: oops, they are liquid chemicals? Dingo has some good info there.

I would be more worried about the Dkh myself. it is designed to raise PH, with no real cap to that. The calcium can not go above what the Mg level allows. After that, it will start snowing.

Either way, it is nothing a water change cannot fix.

    Sorry about your problems.

I wouldn't worry a whole lot about it other than doing a water change and yes test, then test again. The Magnesium won't harm anything. Too much Calcium could cause a Calcium precip(Snow in your tank). If it's not balanced with the buffer. If it hasn't yet, it probably won't but yeah do at least one water change. Good luck with it.

Well today is a new day.

Telgar, last night first thing i did was cut the power. i left it off last night. I did my first 15 gallons W/C from the sump. Tank definitely got something. its cloudy. Remaining fish were easy to catch they seem disoriented and swam into the net. I transfered them to the Q tank and performed another 15 gallons W/C on the tank this time. I don't know that mt 2 tangs are enjoying the 20 gallon Q tank but they are alive. I don't think scooters going to make it he is extremely disoriented and swimming upside down. I prepped another 15 gallons for this evening.

    We will see.

On the other side my little one woke me up before going to daycare this morning with I'm sorry and I love you. Cant be mad at that.
