I'm thinking about upgrading my 36" 30 gallon to a 40 gallon breeder. The problem is my current tank is only 15" wide, so the 40 breeder would overhang the back of the stand by 3 inches. What are your thoughts? Is that going to put too much stress on the tank?

you need to support it, eventually the stress will compramise the silicone seal

That's what I assumed. Glad I came home to post instead of buying. It's hard to walk away from 40 breeders with built in overflows for $40, but I'll just have to wait for my eventual big upgrade.

I would get it, lay a 3/4 piece of plywood under it on the stand an it should be fine, especially if the overhang is even all the way around instead of all in the back.

I have added wood trim around the edges of a stand to support the extra overhang. 3/4" plywood is a good sturdy material for a tank base too.

+1 to the above. When I first got my 36 bowfront It had about a 2 inch overhang in the back. I just cut a piece of plywood to fit the tank and had no problems.

I think I'm just going to skip this one. Maybe I'll check craigslist for a 55.

Or a 90...or why not just go for a 150 while you're at it?

Or a 180! The store that's selling the 40's just sold off a 180 RR set-up with halide t5 lighting, stand, canopy and 120 gallon fuge for $800. That one hurt to let go, but I don't have the space right now.
