    Hey Everyone,
So some of my corals yesterday werent as big and happy as they normally are and I checked all the Params and everything was great. So the past couple days here in southern California we finally got our summer, i checked the temp as the last thing i did and it was at 85.9*F.
I dont run a sump and i have an open top and i dont have A/C in the house, i dont know how to cool the tank down, and i dont want to cool it down and then it get hot again and well frankly i cant affor a chiller(unfortunetely) what should i do?
any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

2 litre bottle filled with water , freeze it and place it in the tank

fans - floor mounted fans directed over the surface of the water will help to cool ( youll need to top off more though)

smaller fans clipped to the edge of your tank and aimed across the surface to remove the heat created by your lights

Point a fan at the tank or make a chiller.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
    Exactly

Your evaporation is going to go through the roof. Temp of 113 and I bet the humity was murder.

Exactly what I would do. I do have a small $7 clip on fan from wal-mart blowing in my sump to help cool the tank off. You can put it above the display and it will do the same thing. it will speed up evaporation thou.

Yup have done this before, with 16oz water bottles in my 29gal. Works like a charm.

A couple of things. Don't know your lighting setup, esspecially with MH. Turn off your lighting sooner or off completely for the next couple of days, or til the heat wave passes.

Turn off your heater, just in case the darn thing is stuck.

Get a window AC unit for that room, they are cheap enough.

    Best of luck.

How would you make a chiller?

No MH lights just 4 65W PC and 2 45W Hal.

I will try the fan trick.

if that doesnt help then I'll try the bottle trick.

i know my heater isnt stuck, that was the first thing that i checked.

do the fans while you freeze the water. you can also put ziploc bags with ice in them in there for a quick fix.

fans, frozen bottles, turn the heater off for now....an ac unit is the only long term solution.

I'm from So Cal as well and the heat has been HORRIBLE!! I live in the Temecula area which is about 45 mins from SD. I'm a water polo referee and had to work in San Bernadino yesterday in the 116 degree heat! Thank God I have a chiller! At least it wasn't as bad today, lots of clouds. Good luck keeping your tank cool.;D
