Yes, overkill for carbon as you want a slower flow through it. You can sandwich the media between the two filter pads and run the 600 wide open, but I do think the 1200 would be borderline too much flow.

For reference I have the MJ600 on my Phosban 150 and I have to close the ball valve to slow the pump down so the carbon does not tumble and disintegrate.

I have not. The way they say to do it is to simply mix the two (i.e. carbon and GFO). You essentially run it the same way you would as if it was carbon only.

I have no experience running GFO, however I do know it is supposed to tumble slightly. Given this, I would think a better way to do this would be to get another filter pad so you could separate the two medias so the carbon could be sandwiched (and so not tumble) and still be able to run the GFO as it should. No idea if anyone has tried this, but it sounds good in my head anyways.

Nice! I assume you are going to get BRS carbon. Seems to be very popular! Just watch how much you put in. Most say to cut what their calculator says in half. I am running about 1/2 cup per 50 gallons on my tanks, but using HydroCarbon 2.

I have some of their rox 8.0 carbon now that i run in a diy gatorade reactor. not sure how good it works? it gets water past it tho. i am sure a reactor will probably work better. but yea unless someone else can show me some other piece of equipment i should get that would benefit me more then a reactor that's probably what i am going to do. Maybe someone will get a group buy going for this month. I was looking at controllers but have no idea about them. haha gonna do some research today.

I have a Reef Angel on my 55 and absolutely love it. I can go into details if you want, but I would not recommend it unless you have at least a basic knowledge of computer programming.
