IIRC, the technique of using LR was introduced to replace the old method of placing live fish (usually a couple damsels) in a sterile tank, which, after surviving the cycle and having the tank to themselves for 4 to 6 weeks, became the "fish from Hell" when you began adding other livestock. While using LR will work, it's definitely not necessary. As others have already mentioned, a raw dead shrimp will work just as well or even better.

If you want to seed your base rock with coralline, buy one small piece of coralline encrusted rubble, then shave the coralline off the rubble into your tank and let the powerheads spread it around.

    Cheers

The LFS guy told me my water would be slimy in three days if I don't use some live rock. What do you think of it?

I don't understand what would make the water "slimy" and 3 days? It does sound like a sales pitch. Your water wont' be fit for fish or corals yet, but that's just the result of the cycle. I've never heard anybody say or mentioned anything similar to "slimy" water during a cycle.

Watch out for what the LFS guy tells you, I made that mistake many times and always ended up with dead fish. So, IMO you can for sure use base rock. I, personally would add a bit of life rock but not that much. Make sure it is porous, so it can function as a filter. You just have to monitor your amonei\nia and nitrite levels at all times and see. I let my tank cycle for 6 months before adding any lifestock. Sooooo many opinions but YOU have to decide for yourself. I used LR and had good experience with that, however if you decide to go with base rock that works just as well. It might take a little longer to build up the necessary bacteria but patience is anyway of utmost importance in this hobby.
    Good luck to you :)

I just started my tank a month ago. I waited a few days then added three damsels ( what I was told to do I know it's wrong now). Then i purchased about ten pounds of base rock and once every week after I just bought a piece of live rock I now have 20 pounds of base and 20 pounds of live my tank looks great and I didn't spend a crazy amount of money because I bought an equal amount of base rock and live

It really depends on where the base rock comes from. I have ordered base rock from two different suppliers and the products were nothing alike. One was smooth and dense and the other was just like fiji LR, only dry.

I would just let it cycle and then seed some coralline when you turn your lights on. I would also doubt everything Mr. Slimy guy tells you from now on.
