I have a 55 gallon with live rock (about 60Lbs) and sand (50lbs) I will slowly be adding corals once I get comfortable with this whole thing. Right now I have a Fluval 306 and I know that's not the best way to go. My question is should I add a protein skimmer. (Looking at octopus models) and continue with the canister filter or can I just use the skimmer. From what I'm reading weekly canister cleaning doesn't sound like too much fun.
I have 1650 gph of circulation from 2 power heads not including the output from my filter.

Side note. Sump is out of the question so I need to findAETech the best way without sump.

Thanks in advance for any input

A sump is out of the question? I think we need a pic of your set up, stand, etc.

There are some cleaver workable solutions with various HOB devices that could work well also.

Keep an eye out on Craigs List, and vist you local/regional Reef society forum/board for lots of good used equipment.

Ok I should of said a sump is out of the question for the next year or so. What's my best option in the meantime? I don't need you to tell me it's optimal just the best I can do without a sump.

Yes you can simply have a skimmer without the canister. You might want a hang on the back filter or fuge to house charcoal and mechanical filtration (sponge/floss).
