    What size tank really needs an overflow? 50G and up?

    i dont think any tank really needs a overflow except over 150gal(no hob skimmers for that size ive seen)
    but even then you could just make area in your tnak for the skimmer like i did in my ten gallon

    but any tank can have a overflow if you want to hide the equipment out of sight.

    so like a 50 gallon would be just fine with some powerheads and a good skimmer

    yes, a some a fuge wouldnt hurt, but its not automatically necessary for success.

    all a sump does is hide equipment.

    A sump also adds water volume which does make it a little easier to maintain high water quality since everything is diluted a little bit more. If you're just setting up a new tank I don't think I would ever go undrilled if I had the option personally.
