I have a thread going.....something just came up that is an ASAP issue. My question is 7th post down. Thanks.

    Here it is..........

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK, new deal here. 75g is not available. I have an odd 48x19 footprint. All I can get is a 90g 48x18. My stand only has a rim to hold the tank. So here it goes.

1.) Will the extra water weight affect the stability of my stand? Loaded question, I know.

2.) I was thinking about putting a 3/4" piece of plywood to make a platform for the tank to sit on and putting additional bracing in the back to support the lack of 19th inch. Two 2x4s and a 1x2 on top of that. I have a very thing floor in my stand that would have to come out. That is fine. I don't want it anyway.

    Suggestions? Thanks.

I don't think so, John. If I'm envisioning properly what you're describing, there's a fairly thin lip that travels around the periphery of the stand's top, and a properly sized tank is made to fit inside this lip, yes?

If that's the case, then putting a piece of plywood on top of that lip won't work because the top rim of that lip is not made to be a load bearing structure. The structure inside the lip, made up in part from the tops of the upright members of the stand is designed to bear the weight of the tank.

If what I'm saying doesn't make sense, then I'm probably envisioning your stand wrong, and disregard this post.

yea don't put plywood on the lip i meant my tank sits on the supporting plywood of the sides. to fix you stand you should just screw a 2x4 in the back to make it a inch shorter, if that makes since. you shouldn't need to change anything else

So I could screw, say, three two by fours to the frame, one in each corner and one in the middle, place a piece of 1x2 across those and attach that to the already existing lip, then place the tank on that? I can see where that would work. I would basically just be moving the weight bearing structure (rear) to the three two by fours and creating something for the bottom of the tank to sit on.

So the lip is raised? The old tank actually fits in the lip, kinda like a reverse shoebox lid?

Yup, like flipping the lid and putting the shoebox in the lid.
