hey ok so i have a 55 gallon tank with about 50 pounds of live rock and 50 pounds of live sand soon to be 100 pounds of it, i might have 60 pounds of live rock idk, i want to make it into a reef tank.

i am getting a HOB refugium, and a aquaC pro protein skimmer, i was told that if i put the macro algae in there with another peice of live rock, that it would be the only filteration that i would need, i will also have 2 1200 maxi jets in there for water movement and such, will i need a mechnical filter like a fluval 404 or something or will it be fine/????

I don't know the details of your HOB refugium, but my refugium allows my chaeto to grow about as big as a basketball. I think this larger chaeto ball plays a pretty big role in competing for the tank's nutrients, and keeps nuisance algae out of the scenario.

I go without any mechanical filtration at all except my skimmer. Works for me. My water movement causes my detritus to accumulate in about 3 areas, which I siphon off during water changes.

I have maybe 70 lbs of LR, and I think the tank could accomodate at least another 40 or 50 lbs.

yo should be okay, granted you allow for refugium to g establish and have ample biological filtration before adding livestock ;)
