    I need to transfer the contents (sand?/live rock/livestock/water)from a 70gallon bow front into a new 220gallon tank.

can I simply buy new live sand to prefill the new 220g tank and then add all my live rock and 65gallons of salt water from the old tank to the new tank and finally top off with new SW? do I need to or should I transfer the sand from the old tank?

any suggestions on the process would be appreciated. thanks.

small livestock load, 3 percs, 1 blue tang, 1 African Red Knob Starfish, 1 Sandsifting starfish, clean up crew.

Transfer as much as you can from the 72. I would fill the majority of the new tank with new sand and then put some of your old sand on top of it.

How old is the sand in your "old" tank? If it's a year or more old, I would do as was already suggested but only add a cup of your old sand to seed the new.

the sand in my old tank is about a year old now.

I will get new sand and add a few cups then.

will the new tank cycle again? any risk to my livestock?

yes u will probaly have a cycle so you need some were to put you live stock or you can just leave them in the old tank and after the new one cycles u can put them in. what you can do is add some of your lr and live sand to the new tank it will spead up the cycle

3Reef has a sand calculator that you can use to figure out how much sand you'll need :)
