I had a log for many yrs in the old days and after I started a tank and anyone who I knew gave me their data I found the time frame for the bacteria arrival as almost as predicable as sunrise is to the day in the days the bacteria types came and went. I'm not getting into naming them all .

I can't recall the actual numbers of days now its been 20, 25plus yrs since I even cared really anymore at this point. But it seems to me it was at 10 days or so the ammonia kicked in then at 23 day's or so that was about done for the first round then at 24 days or so the nitrites kicked in then at 47 days or so the nitrates where there .. Then another mini spike occurred at 60 days and even later up wards of 75 days this could happen if a little to much food was fed or a short interruption in the circulation was had by a pump or something.. at 90 days it was ready for another fish..

This is why I never test for ammonias or nitrites why ? what can be done about them ? Remember these bacteria will be here long after mankind is gone just as they where before man made the scene.. They have been on their on chronological /biological schedule for billions of yrs and they will always do what they do at the time they choose to do it. Man never even knew about them until 150 yrs ago.. Like I said I just give mine the needed time.
A tank can never have to much or any extra stored bacteria.. One little Nemo in a 100,000 gallon tank :) the tank will only have enough denitryfing bacteria on hand to handle that one fish add more then you get a bacterial bloom It needs about 14 days to ctach up to any added fish or bioload feeding included.

I think this is why so many new and older people in the hobby have so many health issues they buy to may fish at once then feed the tank to death to see if they will eat..

ding ding ding ding! We have a winner! Thats my point exactly! Though you can speed up the process by adding packaged bacteria. Yes there is bad bacteria in there, but not enough to harm anything. I added 100ml to a 75g and in less then week, all the tests dropped by half.

Like always say patient's is the most needed and least added element to any marine aquarium. Over the last 35 to 40 yrs I have cycled with every methoed there is and I always come back to the old tried and true origionl one.. Time Lots of time. I never have any algae or health issue . the wheel has already been invented and its not broke.. So I just ride along and let the bacteria be bacteria..

I am a newbie to this hobby (8 months), and what I can't figure out is why everyone is in such a hurry? These are very expensive living things to just "rush". I get that everyone wants instant beauty, but what is beautiful about melting corals, dead fish and cloudy water?

Like the saying goes "Good things come to those who wait!" Should be a reefers motto!

Just my 2 cents...enjoy your tanks;)

My motto is good things happen very slowly and bad things happen really fast! The tank we set up last August just got its 2nd animal in January. And now its fully awake and rocking, no algae ,health , death or water stability..

Every time I mention this cycle period to anyone the frist things they say is "there is chemicals to speed that up"... I guess mother nature should have a big account at the local chemical store then...:-/
