So I just ordered a Deep Blue 80g rimless for xmas - I'll be moving everything from my 30g frag tank over the next couple of months, going to build a stand over the holidays and stock up on a few "necessities" for the new tank ;)

My question is this - I'm running a Turbofloater 1000 (link below) and it is doing a good job, pulling about half a coffee colored stuff a week, my nitrates have been at 0 since the beginning of the system, but will it handle an 80g SPS only tank? My concern is the technology is old (I've owned it for over 15 years, still running the Rio 2100 pumps it came with!) and I've read a lot of good things about the reef octopus 6" pinwheel skimmer. Would be nice to run my existing skimmer for a little while to purchase other things (Maxspect razor, RKL, dosing pumps, etc.) and worry about the skimmer in 6 months or so. Let me know your thoughts.

My opinion is, that as you are upgrading and thus initially moving current stock into a tank with larger volume and there after, probably increasing your stock on a gradual addition basis you will be fine with the current skimmer

when new it was apparently suitable for tanks much larger than the one you will be using it on anyway
and whilst it has seen a lot of service, if it is still running as it should, I see no reason to rush out and invest in a new one at this stage

in the future as your stock increases you may well decide you want a new skimmer
but in the mean time, what you have will be more than adequate

Thanks Steve - was hoping for that kind of answer! As you said, my load is pretty small at the moment and I'm not planning on rushing out to stock the tank with many more fish or invertebrates, 100% focused on growing my acro frags and maintaining my parameters.

    Appreciate the advice
