Hey so i have a fluval fx5 (yes, the largest monster one they make for aquariums, rated up to like a bagillion gallons :) ) i tore down my tank and it is cycling now, but i want to know if i even need to use the canister filter at all. I had a HUGE gha problem i believe because of it and i want to avoid that. Can i run my tank on carbon, a skimmer, and a fuge alone?

Mine has been crystal clear and gorgeous since I started and I have never had any filtration more than carbon skimmer and a bit of cheato!
Personally I am actually against canister filters...

That's exactly how I have mine setup. I also have a dsb. I love it now that I have no mechanical filters.

i run my tank with live rock and a HOB skimmer... works for me.

skimmer counts as mechanical filtration too, btw.

My old tank ran with only a skimmer as mechanical filtration. That and the fuge. No chemicals ever went in the tank.

No need at all. Better ways of doing buisness.
